Reconocer que la realidad es una construcción subjetiva, fomenta la empatía
Esta premisa es el punto de partida de mi nuevo proyecto fotográfico, realizado sin ningún tipo de retoque digital ni filtros.
It is important to recognise that reality is a subjective construct in order to foster empathy.
This premise forms the foundation of my new photography project, which is created without the use of digital retouching or filters.
Esto es lo que yo vi cuando miré el mar.
Entré en trance en ese instante, porque lo que estaba mirando, era muy diferente a la imagen que procesaba mi cerebro neurodivergente.
This is what I observed when I looked at the sea.
I experienced a moment of cognitive dissonance, as the visual information I was processing diverged from the expected neurological response.

Al día siguiente de experimentar esa “visión” mirando el mar, logré representar con la cámara –y sin ningún retoque digital ni filtros–, lo que el día antes percibieron mis sentidos, mi cerebro, mi alma, mi experiencia. Una imagen mucho más onírica y profunda. Como decía Gastón Bachelard en La poética del espacio: “El paisaje no se percibe solo con la mirada, sino que se habita desde la imaginación, la memoria y la experiencia íntima del espacio.”
Cuando yo miraba el mar, lo estaba soñando a la vez. El mar se transformó en mi interior. Acepté esa transformación y hoy puedo ofrecer esta mirada alternativa al mundo, para seguir con mi activismo en favor de lo diverso.
Lucho por el respeto a la diferencia, a lo diverso, a lo raro, al otro. Para conseguir espacios donde exista la variedad de miradas. Donde puedan existir múltiples mares y océanos. Porque existen tantos mares como miradas lo observan, no quiero bancos de imágenes con un único patrón. La vida no la representan los bancos de imágenes utilizados por marketing. En la dictadura de su belleza, no cabe representar la diversidad absoluta de la que se compone la vida.
Yo veo lo que no existe para otros. Otros ven lo que no existe para mí. Y existen todas a la vez.
Existe el mar en multitud de formas, colores y contrastes. Yo he representado en estas fotografías cómo percibí los rayos del sol incidiendo en el agua del mar. Tan extrañas como os pueden parecer estas imágenes del mar, somos todos nosotrxs en el mundo. Lo extraño, lo raro, lo diferente, lo imposible, está entre nosotros. Porque los extraños, los raros, los diferentes o imposibles, somos nosotrxs mismxs. Somos diversos y, como diversos, todxs vemos de manera diferente, todxs somos “raros”.
La sociedad que impone un único estándar –lo normativo–, donde solo puede existir una realidad, nos conduce al miedo. A temer y negar la diversidad. Porque cuando uno acepta la existencia del otro diferente, deja nacer una constelación de luz que puede cegar su mirada heredada, teledirigida e impuesta, que le llevaba a percibir un único color, forma y dimensión. Y con la aceptación del otro diferente, es cuando ese individuo puede llegar a cuestionarse el mundo e incluso su propia identidad. Algo que da pavor a alguien que le han enseñado que su vida tiene que ser de una única manera, sin abrirse a la variedad de verdades. Yo prefiero que existan más Bowies en el mundo, con su lema: “Yo creo en encontrar mi propia verdad”.
Tenemos un problema crítico en la sociedad: quien ve de forma diferente, no lo comunica, no lo transmite, no lo divulga. Por miedo al qué dirán. Por miedo a ser diferente. Perdiéndose así la riqueza de la variedad por falta de la libre expresión y transmisión de la diversidad neurodivergente. Siempre habrá alguien que vea diferente y si esta persona comunica a los demás cómo ve el mundo, estará legitimando una forma de ser y estar nueva para ese objeto, paisaje o persona. Legitimará como real una manera más de ser y estar en el mundo, con sus múltiples variedades según su mirada. Por lo que ya existirán dos, tres, cuatro o cien realidades diferentes de una misma cosa. Todas son realidad. Todas son verdad. Todas son.
Yo quiero dar voz a la diversidad de interpretaciones del mundo, desde mi propia visión y mirada. Porque lo que capto con mi fotografía, me representa más que mi DNI o mi CV.
Las imágenes de este proyecto, aunque pueda parecer lo contrario, no tienen ningún retoque digital ni filtros. ¿Por qué utilizar filtros o retoques digitales si ya actúa como filtro nuestra biología, lenguaje, cultura… moldeando la realidad? Cada persona construye su propia versión de la realidad. No vemos las cosas como son, sino como somos. Y somos diferentes, diversos, raros, múltiples.
Lo que no se ve, lo raro, lo diferente, lo alternativo, es refugio. Es cultura. Es el arte de vivir. Es hogar. Es real. Es futuro. ¡Confía en lo que ves aunque nadie más lo vea! ¡Confía en lo raro, lo diferente, lo extraño, lo diverso! Porque al ser único, es más profundo. Porque si nadie más lo ve, es el momento más importante de tu vida, cuando ves tu propio autorretrato. Solo podemos ver lo que tenemos en nuestro interior, lo que conocemos, lo que tenemos, lo que sabemos, lo que sentimos, lo que amamos.
Os presento mi mar. El mar al que me acerqué de forma más continuada desde hace un par de años. El Mediterráneo que me da los buenos días cada mañana y que nunca es igual, aunque mis ojos sí lo sean.
The day after experiencing that 'vision' while looking at the sea, I was able to capture with my camera – without any digital retouching or filters – what my senses, my brain, my soul and my experience had perceived the day before. This is a much more dreamlike and profound image. As Gaston Bachelard said in The Poetics of Space: 'The landscape is not perceived only with the gaze, but is inhabited by the imagination, memory and intimate experience of space.'
When I looked out to sea, I was also lost in thought. The sea had a profound effect on me. I embraced this transformation, and today I can offer this alternative perspective on the world, allowing me to continue my activism in support of diversity.
I fight for respect for difference, for diversity, for the unusual, for the other. The objective is to create spaces that encourage a diversity of perspectives. In areas where multiple seas and oceans are present. Given the numerous perspectives on the seas, I am not in favour of image banks with a single pattern. Life is not represented by the image banks used by marketing. In the dictatorship of their beauty, there is no room to represent the absolute diversity that makes up life.
I see what does not exist for others. Others see what does not exist for me. And they all exist at the same time.
The sea exists in a multitude of forms, colours and contrasts. In these photographs, I have represented how I perceived the sun's rays shining on the sea water. As peculiar as these images of the sea may appear, they represent all of us on this planet. The strange, the weird, the different, the impossible, is among us. We are all individuals who are strange, weird, different or impossible in our own right. We are a diverse group, and as such, we all have our own unique perspectives.
A society that imposes a single standard – the normative one – where only one reality can exist, leads us to fear. To fear and deny diversity. Because when one accepts the existence of someone who is different, a constellation of light is born that can blind one's inherited, remote-controlled and imposed gaze, which led one to perceive only one colour, shape and dimension. And it is through accepting those who are different that individuals can begin to question the world and even their own identity. This is something that terrifies those who have been taught that their lives must be lived in a single way, without opening themselves up to a variety of truths. I prefer there to be more Bowies in the world, with their motto: “I believe in finding my own truth”.
We have a critical problem in society: those who see things differently do not communicate it, do not convey it, do not disseminate it. For fear of what others will say. For fear of being different. Thus, the richness of variety is lost due to a lack of free expression and transmission of neurodivergent diversity. There will always be someone who sees differently, and if this person communicates to others how they see the world, they will be legitimising a new way of being and existing for that object, landscape or person. They will legitimise as real another way of being and existing in the world, with its multiple varieties according to their perspective. So there will already be two, three, four or a hundred different realities of the same thing. All are reality. All are true. All are.
I want to give voice to the diversity of interpretations of the world, from my own perspective and point of view. Because what I capture with my photography represents me more than my ID card or my CV.
The images in this project, although it may seem otherwise, have not been digitally retouched or filtered. Why use filters or digital retouching when our biology, language, culture, etc. already act as filters, shaping reality? Each person constructs their own version of reality. We do not see things as they are, but as we are. And we are different, diverse, strange, multiple.
What cannot be seen, what is unusual, different, alternative, is a refuge. It is culture. It is the art of living. It is home. It is real. It is the future. Trust what you see even if no one else sees it! Trust the unusual, the different, the strange, the diverse! Because being unique is more profound. Because if no one else sees it, it is the most important moment of your life, when you see your own self-portrait. We can only see what we have inside us, what we know, what we have, what we feel, what we love.
I present to you my sea. The sea I have been visiting most regularly for a couple of years now. The Mediterranean that greets me every morning and is never the same, even though my eyes are.
La banda sonora del proyecto
Siempre elijo una música para el proceso creativo de mis proyectos. Un artista o disco que escucho mientras genero lo visual o escribo. Y siempre se queda conmigo, en ese entorno privado entre mi Yo como creador y la obra, como resultado artístico.
En este caso, quiero que sea diferente. Quiero, no solo compartirlo, sino que sea parte protagonista del proyecto. El grupo musical es Openness Trio, un colectivo musical formado por el guitarrista y productor Nate Mercereau, el saxofonista Josh Johnson y el percusionista Carlos Niño.
En el mismo instante en el que veía mis fotografías por primera vez –sin saber muy bien si había conseguido la imagen que quería captar–, puse este disco aún desconocido para mí. Cuando abrí las imágenes escuchando a la vez esta música, sentí que el universo había hecho magia al conectar estas dos creaciones. Mis imágenes parecían más reales, vivas y profundas. Como si me envolvieran en tres dimensiones. Esta banda sonora, me ayudó a introducirme en un universo íntimo que amplificaba lo visual y creaba una experiencia espiritual, tan potente en mi, que he querido compartirlo con todo el mundo para regalar esa sensación, que espero también viva en ti.
Tras mi inicial sensación espiritual, investigué sobre el disco y sus creadores. Y quiero hacer especial énfasis en las ideas que transmiten los integrantes de este trío musical, porque también conecta misteriosamente con el propósito de mi proyecto. "Música de confianza" es como Niño y Mercereau describieron su música en una entrevista a JazzTimes. “Confianza” es justo la palabra que yo ya había elegido como parte del título de mi proyecto :) Y continúan diciendo en dicha entrevista: ”Es un gran logro porque mostramos cómo nos importa estar juntos... Informamos sonoramente desde lo más profundo de nuestro ser".
Como titulan uno de los temas "Todo es posible”, conecta con el propósito de este proyecto fotográfico en la medida que todas las miradas son válidas y deben ser respetadas, porque todo es posible. Y hasta que no comprendamos que todo es posible, será imposible vivir realmente en una comunidad empáticamente fértil. Cometiendo una vez tras otra los mismos errores, por no comprender que existen otras maneras de ver, de ser, de vivir.
Extrapolemos por un momento a la categoría Humanidad, lo que decían sobre este disco en jazzmessengers: “La música nace de la comunicación profunda, la experimentación y la confianza mutua, buscando un estado de apertura a nuevas ideas sin preconceptos. Estas sesiones libres se basan en la comunicación abierta, la escucha profunda y la sensibilidad espiritual, dando como resultado un rico universo sonoro de texturas ambientales… Cada tema es un entorno en sí mismo: inmersivo, íntimo y vibrante”.
Y otro texto muy interesante surge del mismo Bluenote, el sello discográfico del jazz por antonomasia, con el que este trio debuta. Los describen como Free-thinking creators, algo así como creadores de pensamiento libre. Y continúan describiendo al grupo y sus conciertos como: “…'Apertura' es la palabra y descripción ideal para lo que está sucediendo aquí”, dice Mercereau. “Escucha, emoción inmersiva, comunicación profunda, descubrimiento, confianza, exploración y llegar al momento para presenciar y compartir dónde estamos, adónde vamos y dónde hemos estado: todo esto permite que nuestra música se desarrolle como lo hace”. “Es muy raro sentirse tan capaz de confiar tanto en alguien; amplía tu confianza y tu autoconciencia, y tu sentido de ser digno de confianza”, dice Niño. “Lo que más me gusta de tocar con este trío es el título: “Apertura”. La comunicación, la conexión totalmente psíquica que tenemos juntos, es eléctrica y profundamente nutritiva, vigorizante… Es Apertura”.
The soundtrack of the project
I always choose music for the creative process of my projects. An artist or album that I listen to while I create. And it always stays with me, in that private space between myself and the artistic result.
In this case, I want it to be different. I want not only to share it, but also for it to be a key part of the project. The band is Openness Trio, a musical collective formed by guitarist and producer Nate Mercereau, saxophonist Josh Johnson and percussionist Carlos Niño.
The moment I saw my photographs for the first time – not quite sure if I had captured the image I wanted – I put on this album, which was still unknown to me. When I opened the images while listening to this music, I felt that the universe had worked its magic by connecting these two creations. My images seemed more real, alive and profound. The power of the soundtrack was such that it enabled me to enter an intimate universe, where the visual element was amplified and a spiritual experience was created. This was so powerful that I felt compelled to share it with everyone, in the hope that they would experience the same feeling.
After my initial spiritual feeling, I researched the album and its creators. And I want to place special emphasis on the ideas conveyed by the members of this musical trio, because it also mysteriously connects with the purpose of my project. ‘Music of trust’ is how Niño and Mercereau described their music in an interview with JazzTimes. ‘Trust’ is precisely the word I had already chosen as part of the title of my project :) And they go on to say in that interview: “…we’re showing how we care to be with each other, and explore each other’s vulnerability, the depths of our secrets and such. We’re sonically reporting from the inner depths”.
As one of the themes is titled ‘…Anything is possible’, it connects with the purpose of this photographic project insofar as all perspectives are valid and must be respected, because everything is possible. And until we understand that everything is possible, it will be impossible to truly live in an empathetically fertile community. Repeating the same mistakes over and over again, because we fail to understand that there are other ways of seeing, of being, of living.
Let's extrapolate for a moment to the Humanity category, what they said about this album on jazzmessengers: "The music is born out of deep communication, experimentation and mutual trust, seeking a state of openness to new ideas without preconceptions. These free sessions are based on open communication, deep listening and spiritual sensitivity, resulting in a rich sound universe of ambient textures... Each track is an environment in itself: immersive, intimate and vibrant."
Another very interesting text comes from Bluenote itself, the jazz record label par excellence, with which this trio is making its debut. They describe them as free-thinking creators. They go on to describe the group and their concerts as: ‘...“Openness’ is the ideal word and description for what is happening here,” says Mercereau. “Listening, Immersive Emoting, Deep Communication, Discovery, Trust, Exploration, and arriving to the moment to witness and share where we are, where we are going, and where we’ve been – these are all things that allow our music to happen in the way that it does.” ‘It is very rare to feel so able to trust anyone so much, it expands your trust and awareness of yourself, and your sense of being trustworthy,” says Niño. “My favorite thing about playing with this Trio is in the Title: Openness. The totally psychic communication, connection that we have together is electric and deeply nourishing, invigorating… It is Open.’
